The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is an officially certified, self-winding chronometer wristwatch with chronograph functions. From its beginnings in 1961, the Cosmograph, Cosmograph Daytona and Oyster Cosmograph Daytona chronographs were produced continuously until 1988, when they were replaced with versions featuring self-winding movements, from Zenith's El Primero caliber, under the name Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph. Since 2000, Rolex began manufacturing its own movements and developed the Rolex 4130 caliber (model number: 116520). Due to its limited production and increasing popularity, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is considered a rare watch to own.
It is a popular misconception that Rolex has a Platinum edition Daytona in their production line. As of Basil World, April 2008, there has not yet been a Daytona released by Rolex made from such precious metal. Steel and Gold models of different mix/match are the only options thus far. Some Authorized dealers allow for their patrons to enroll on a "waiting list" to purchase the coveted Stainless Steel Daytona (Model 116520).
